Brunello di Montalcino 2015 0,75 Lt
2015: Brunello’s fairy-tale vintage
Slope and Position: hilly southwest
Altitude: 374m above sea level
Climate: typically Mediterranean with precipitation concentrated in spring and autumn months. The location of our vineyards, the ventilation and the lack of fog guarantee the best conditions for vine vegetation and for the health of the grapes
Soil Composition: Particularly rocky soil made up of marl and alberese (clay, lime and rock) Shales
Variety: 100% Sangiovese select
Training System and Pruning: Horizontal cordon training with short pruning, 4 to 5 spurs with maximum of 2 buds per plant which allows for a low yield per hectare, around 65 quintals in 2015
Cultivation Techniques: are entirely done by hand with particular care and attention to the winter pruning, the selection of shoots and the thinning out of the grapes
Harvest: first week of October in 2015
Vinification: the grapes are vinified separately in steel vats. The fermentation is temperature controlled between 24° and 26° with a long maceration of the grapes, which, with frequent pumping over of the cap and délestage, allow for the extraction of polyphenols from the skins which has an important function in the longevity and quality of the wine.
Drawing off: soft pressing to separate the skins from the wine
Ageing: three years, instead of only two required by the disciplinary, in 25 to 32 hl oak barrels and at least one year in the bottle.
Organoleptic Characteristics: The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The words for the 2015 vintage are density, tannins and freshness, this wine is rich, yet it is fresh at the same time.
2015 Brunello shows a beautiful depth of fruit and endless length. It is dense and rich wine with great structure of tannins yet they remain finely textured and comprehensive in the mouth and the seamless tannins seem to melt into the wine.
We admit that it is tempting to say that 2015 is one of Brunello di Montalcino’s best vintage ever, and it may very well be! It certainly compares to other great years of the appellation including 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2012. 2015 comes very close to the average of the great 2010 vintage.
The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. Good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines so, we had great hang time, we had a balanced summer despite the heat. We slowed maturity. We harvested the first week of October. This excellent hang time when the grapes are allowed to evenly ripen on the vine certainly delivered a wonderful wine.
2015 Brunello shows complex and beautiful aromas. It is not just ripe fruit when you stick your nose in the glass. The palates of the best show such fine-grained tannins. This wonderful harmony in the nose and palate makes the wine so approachable that you want to drink it now.
However, this is a Brunello that will age beautifully for decades ahead making them historical in every sense of the word!
